Description

Character

The Doberman has served as a military and police dog, as a hunting dog, as a shepherd dog, as a property-guard, as a bodyguard, etc. It has a highly developed protective instinct, is always on guard, and is brave, fearless and agile, thus being an ideal guard dog. It may be kept as a pet, but it is not recommended to novice dog owners. It must be socialized from early on to prevent it from becoming overly protective, and must also be trained. It does not get along very well with other pets or with children. Despite its cautiousness toward strangers, it is friendly, affectionate and very devoted to its master. It needs human company and should therefore not be left alone for long periods. It is an energetic dog in need of plenty of daily exercise.

Appearance

The Doberman is a medium-sized dog. The male’s height ranges from 66 to 72 cm tall and it weighs from 38 to 45 kilos. The female’s height ranges from 61 to 68 cm tall and it weighs from 30 to 35 kilos. Its coat is short, thick, and smooth, and does not require regular grooming. Its coat-color may be black, red, blue or fawn, with brown patches on its muzzle, chest, underneath its legs, and beneath the tail.
