The strength, courage, size, readiness, devotion, and protective instincts that are so characteristic of the American Akita make it ideal for house-guarding duties. When the owner is absent, no stranger is welcome. When the owner welcomes the guest, the Akita does likewise. Though generally an obedient dog, it is also a dog with an opinion, and it demands respect. For this reason it is not recommended for owners who would like to have a dog which complies with its master’s orders always and without exception. The owner needs to assert himself early on, with steadfast consistency, else the dog might become too aggressive toward other dogs and animals. Even when it is properly socialized, it has a tendency to be aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. The Akita is a fast-learner, which means that it gets bored easily, and for this reason it is ideal for an active and tireless dog owner.
